The following animation depicts normal airflow from rotor downwash

 

then introduces wing-tip vortices

 

the wing-tip vortices slow in descent speed 

(result of an increase in induced flow)

 

the vortices then move into recycled airflow back over the top of the disc & re-enters the induced airflow - entering into Vortex Ring State.
